Muslims mark ‘Feast of Sacrifice’

ROXAS City -- Muslims here gathered on Friday for the Eid ul-Adha or the Feast of Sacrifice.

The local Muslim community slaughtered a carabao for a salo-salo (get-together) after an early morning prayer at a mosque in Brgy. Tanque.

Some 100 Muslim families attended and partook of the food in one of the most revered festivals of the Islamic community.
The Muslim community was led by its president, Gambai Palao.

The sermon during the gathering focused on the commemoration of the willingness of Abraham to sacrifice his eldest son Ishmael in obedience to a command from Allah, and Ishmael’s acceptance of this command.

President Benigno Aquino III declared October 26 a regular holiday throughout the country through Presidential Proclamation No. 488.

“The National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) recommended that the observance of Eid ul-Adha be on October 26, 2012 and the Eid ul-Adha prayer be performed on the final declaration of the Saudi government,” said part of the proclamation issued by Malacañang on October 9.

The Feast of Sacrifice or Day of Sacrifice is observed after the Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia.

The members of the local Muslim community also celebrated Eid ul-Fitr (Feast of Ramadan) in August.
