Rebels torch truck?

BY FELIPE CELINO

ROXAS City — Police are investigating the burning of a truck in Brgy. Quinabonglan, Maayon town recently.

They are zeroing in on reports that the suspects were members of the New People’s Army allegedly led by Romulo Gangoso alias “Ka Reagan,” who are demanding revolutionary taxes from the truck owner, Erlinda Alcazaren of Brgy. Poblacion, President Roxas.

Alcazaren was said to have refused to give in to their demands, police said.

Insp. Kim Lopez, Maayon police chief, could not confirm the reports as of press time.

A tipster told the police that three unidentified armed men stopped the truck, driven by Marcelo Denosta, which was about to get sacks of corn in Brgy. Quinabonglan.

The suspects commanded Denosta to bring the truck to a remote area where 30 armed men were waiting.

They then hogtied the driver and his companions while some of them poured gasoline on the truck and burned it, the informant said.

After the incident, the suspects fled toward Lemery, Iloilo, the tipster said.

Damage incurred from the incident amounted to about P400,000.
