8,090 helmets in Capiz verified, marked

ROXAS City — A total of 8,090 helmets were verified and marked with Philippine Standards (PS) or Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) stickers by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) here from July to December 21 this year.

This was a result of the DTI’s intensified motorcycle helmet verification and marking activities in the province. The agency had scheduled out-of-town activities to reach more motorcycle drivers and back riders. In July, the Department of Transportation and Communications ordered the Land Transportation Office to defer enforcement of the Helmet Act until tomorrow. This was based on the DTI’s request to give them more time to complete the inspection of motorcycle head gears nationwide.

The law was originally set for implementation on August 1 this year. The DTI will shift its monitoring of motorcycle helmets compliance with existing policies among stores and other local retailers after the verification and marking activities ended on December 21. Motorists violating the law shall be issued citation tickets and be meted with appropriate penalties. Motorcycle drivers and back riders caught not wearing the standard protective motorcycle helmet shall be fined P1,500 for the first offense; P3,000 for the second offense; P5,000 for the third offense; and P10,000 with confiscation of the driver’s license for the fourth and succeeding offenses.
