2 nabbed for ‘rape-slay’

BY FELIPE CELINO

BORACAY — Authorities arrested two men for allegedly raping and killing a 16-year-old girl last year. Collared were Rodel Gelito and Joseph Onate, both residents of this resort island.

Joint elements of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group in Aklan under SPO4 Pedro Celino, the Police Regional Office 6’s Regional Intelligence Division led by SPO4 Angelito de Jose, and the Military Intelligence Group under TSgt. Alan Robles, carried out the arrest.

Regional Trial Court Branch 3 in Kalibo Judge Bienvenido Barrios issued the warrant of arrest against the suspects on October 24 this year. Gelito and Onate were alleged members of the Alpha Kappa Rho fraternity. They were charged for allegedly raping and killing Aprilyn Tana, 16, on May 27, 2011. Tana’s body was found in a cave at the Lapus-Lapus Hills here three days after the victim went missing. Police said the victim got several injuries in the different parts of her body.

A bottle of beer was found embedded in her sexual organ, which led to suspicions that the victim was raped before she was killed, authorities said. Tana was a fourth year high school student of the Boracay National High School in Malay, Aklan.
