ROXAS City — Hundreds of relatives, friends and supporters have brought Prof. Roque Diaz to his final resting place on November 3.
Diaz, fondly called as “King,” was buried at the Cogon Cemetery in Panitan town after a Holy Mass at the nearby St. Vincent Ferrer Church in Brgy. Bailan, Pontevedra.
Some of those who attended the funeral wore pins with the words “Justice for King,” while others had streamers bearing the same message.
Diaz, a doctor of education, was supposedly be installed as dean of the Capiz State University (CapSU) College of Information Technology.
But he was stabbed in his car in Brgy. Tanza Sur, Panay on October 20, 2012, while on his way home from this city. He died.
He succumbed to 21 wounds — 14 stabs and five slashes — three of which were fatal, Noel Martinez, medico-legal of the Philippine National Police Crime Laboratory, said.
Based on the multiple injuries that the victim incurred, Martinez said Diaz’s killing was a “crime of passion.”
Officials and tanods of Brgy. Tanza Gua, Panay found the wounded Diaz inside his car near a rice field in nearby Brgy. Tanza Sur and brought him to St. Anthony College Hospital here.
Diaz, a resident of Brgy. Bailan, Pontevedra, died a few minutes later.
Martinez said the suspect may have stabbed Diaz while he was driving. A cap and a T-shirt were recovered from inside Diaz’s car.

Charly Fabela-Diaz, 40, said her husband was teaching doctorate students, most of whom were his fellow teachers, at CapSU every Saturday.
According to her, her husband and his fellow teachers/students were binge drinking in a bar on Roxas Avenue here prior to the incident.
The last person he met was a certain Arthur Progio of Brgy. Milibili here, she said.
Diaz was a younger brother of former Sangguniang Bayan member Joel Diaz of Maayon.
He and his wife had three children — Romari Charlz, 14, Roque Jr., 6, and KC Jannah Marie, 2.
