Contreras in shortlist for CA assoc. justice

BY FELIPE CELINO

ROXAS City — Regional Trial Court (RTC) Executive Branch 17 Judge Edward Contreras is in the shortlist for the Court of Appeals (CA) associate justice position left vacant by the demise of Justice Abraham Borreta. Contreras was among the 49 applicants vying for the position.

In 2005, Contreras issued the injunction against then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s People’s Initiative campaign for charter change. On the eve of the election period in January 10, 2010, Contreras also issued an injunction against the Philippine National Police and the Department of Interior and Local Government’s attempt to replace the Capiz police director without due consultation with the governor.

The RTC judge is the author of a 280-page book titled Capiz: Prospect and Retrospect. He has served as editor-in-chief of the University of the Philippines (UP) Visayas’ official student newspaper for two terms, and was elected president of UP Visayas Student Council in 1976.
