Release incentives for athletes — Board member

BY FELIPE CELINO

ROXAS City — An ex-officio Provincial Board member of Capiz urged concerned local government officials to release the incentives of athletes from the province who recently won in several sports competitions. Zoe Maria Felipe Herrera also appealed to the School Board to take action on the matter, considering that many Capiceño athletes recently brought home medals for winning in regional, national and international sports events.

Herrera, president of the Sangguniang Kabataan provincial federation, said he received reports that some athletes and coaches in Capiz have not yet received their incentives — despite a local law that entitles them to the same. Ordinance No. 001 series of 2011, authored by Board member Jaime Magbanua, grants monetary incentives to Capiz athletes and coaches who excel in regional, national and international athletics and sports competitions.

In his recent privilege speech, Herrera said the Special Education Fund could be used to fund the incentives. “I am appealing to all (officials) concerned, particularly the members of the School Board, to look into this matter and, if possible, facilitate the early release of the said incentives,” the Provincial Board Committee on Youth and Sports chairman stressed. Some P120,000 worth of incentives were reportedly not yet given out to the athletes. Reports had it that this budget had already been depleted.
