BSP steps up drive on functions, banknotes

ROXAS City — The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) continues to intensify its education campaign on its different functions and programs and the new banknotes. It is conducting orientations in different schools and offices in Capiz, particularly on the distinct security features of the new banknotes, as well as on coin circulation program, said Andrew June Ligad, BSP information officer. He said the BSP had conducted information and education activities in the Capiz State University, Colegio de la Purisima Concepcion, Filamer Christian University, College of Saint John, and schools in Sigma and Ivisan towns. Ligad said part of their advocacy focuses on the BSP clean note policy, as well as on the new generation currency.

“Many do not have the idea of the three pillars of central banking such as on price and financial stability, as well as on efficient payments and settlements system,” he said. On the clean notes policy, Ligad reminded the public that Presidential Decree No. 247 clearly prohibits the defacement, mutilation, burning or destruction of the country’s legal tender such as the banknotes and coins. “Writing on the banknotes is prohibited under the law,” he said, urging the public to be fully aware of the policy. To avoid the circulation of counterfeit or fake money, the public must also be aware about the characteristics, designs and security features of the new generation banknotes, Ligad stressed. On the other hand, he assured the public of sufficient supply of coins in the country, particularly in Capiz. He said the problem is not on the supply of coins but on the circulation of the said legal tender; hence, he appealed for everyone’s cooperation for the efficient recirculation of coins.
