‘Huge turnout on Comelec deadline’

BY FELIPE CELINO ROXAS City — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Capiz is expecting a heavy turnout of registrants at 5 p.m. today, the deadline of the voters registration. Provincial Election Supervisor Wil Arceño said the number of new registrants is expected to increase by more than 10 percent. According to Arceño, they are prioritizing new registrants and those who seek transfer of voting place. The revalidation of registration was temporarily deferred after the Comelec national office issued a memorandum saying that those who could not validate their registration this year are allowed to vote in the mid-term elections next year, he said. Capiz currently has a total of 432,549 registered voters, the provincial Comelec’s statistical data showed.

Recent data also showed that the province’s 473 barangays have 2,593 established and 674 clustered precincts. Capiz has two congressional districts, 16 towns and a component/capital city. The 1st District, composed of six towns and the component/capital city of Roxas, has 227,780 registered voters. On the other hand, the 2nd District, composed of 10 towns, has 204,769 registered voters. Meanwhile, a total of 186 elective positions are at stake in Capiz in the 2013 polls. These include the positions of congressman (two), governor, vice governor, Sangguniang Panlalawigan members (10), mayor and vice mayor (17 each), and Sangguniang Bayan/Panlungsod members (138).
