ROXAS City — The Provincial School Board has approved P1 million worth of cash incentives for medalist athletes in Capiz.
It approved the other day a resolution appropriating the amount, which will be charged to the School Board Fund.
Ex-officio Provincial Board member Zoe Maria Felipe Herrera, during a meeting with the School Board Monday, moved for the passing of the approval of the resolution.
She was seconded by Sol Miguel Jimenez, president of the Parents, Teachers and Community Association.
Present in the meeting were Gov. Victor Tanco, Department of Education Provincial Supervisor Eveleth Gamboa, Provincial Treasurer Wendy Sustento, Mila Bayhon, Freddie Asis and Marlene Aguilar.
Herrera, Sangguniang Kabataan provincial federation president, earlier urged concerned local government officials to release the incentives of Capiceño athletes who recently won in several sports competitions.
Zoe Maria Felipe Herrera also appealed to the School Board to take action on the matter, considering that many Capiceño athletes recently brought home medals for winning in regional, national and international sports events.
He said he received reports that some athletes and coaches in Capiz have not yet received their incentives — despite a local law that entitles them to the same.
Provincial Ordinance No. 001 series of 2011, authored by Board member Jaime Magbanua, which grants monetary incentives to Capiz athletes and coaches who excel in regional, national and international athletics and sports competitions.
In his recent privilege speech, Herrera said the Special Education Fund could be used to fund the incentives.
“I am appealing to all (officials) concerned, particularly the members of the School Board, to look into this matter and, if possible, facilitate the early release of the said incentives,” the Provincial Board Committee on Youth and Sports chairman stressed.
